The Species at Risk Technician will assist the implementation of species at risk field projects in the Maitland River watershed. The contract duration will be April 1st to September 5th, 2025, and the rate of pay will be $21/hour for 35 hours/week. The office space available to the technician will be in Goderich, Ontario. Mileage costs for field work will be reimbursed.
Position Summary
The primary responsibilities of the technician would be to assist with monitoring at-risk plant, turtle and snake species in Huron County, participate in outreach programming to schools and community groups, and completion of a technical report summarizing field work, and spatial and statistical analysis. Depending on the skills of the successful applicant, the technician could also be involved in publishing the results.
The technician will work alongside HSC’s Lead Species at Risk Technician and report to the HSC Board. Other duties for this position include assisting with project design and writing grant applications. Data input, management, and analysis will be required for completion of the technical reports. The technician may be asked to work evenings and weekends, if necessary. The technician will be in the field 3-5 days per week. Applicants 30 years or under will be given preference, since this is a requirement of the funding source that supports this position.
Qualifications
•Skills in data collection, management, and analysis
•Proficient at making maps using ArcGIS mapping software
•Skills in spatial analysis a major asset
•Demonstrate the ability to work independently and with a team, think critically and troubleshoot problems
•Advanced communications skills (written, oral)
•Experience with study design and writing grant proposals
•Experience managing volunteers and working as part of a team
•Knowledge of group dynamics and team building, working with partners
•Experience working with landowners and conservation partners
•Experience in wildlife research, handling reptiles
•Plant and reptile identification an asset
