On Saturday June 25th, the Huron Stewardship Council will be cohosting a free all ages
called a ‘bioblitz’ with Ontario Nature and the Huron Fringe Field Naturalists. You are invited to join expert biologists for a hike at the George G. Newton Reserve, where you’ll learn about local plants and animals.
This event is great for families, amateur naturalists, hikers, … really, everyone who is interested in learning more about nature!
In a bioblitz, our goal is to identify and record as many species as possible within a short period of time. It’s a great opportunity for a hands-on learning experience! You can join up with biologists who specialize in identifying reptiles, amphibians, plants and birds. All ages and abilities are welcome.
Schedule:
9am – 12pm: Join up with an expert and see how many species you can identify!
12pm – 1pm: Free brown bag lunch provided
1pm – 3pm: Continue searching for, and identifying the Cool Critters who make their home in Huron County
This is the second bioblitz ever hosted in Huron County. When the Huron Stewardship Council and Ontario Nature teamed up for the first bioblitz, in 2014, 60 participants and experts found 189 reptiles and amphibians, including two rare species!
The George G. Newton Reserve is located on the southeast corner of Kitchigami Road and Porter’s Hill Line, south of Goderich and west of Holmesville. Perched upon the rolling Wyoming Moraine, not far inland from Lake Huron, the reserve was once a farm until it was donated to Ontario Nature. The trail system through the reserve, maintained by the Huron Fringe Field Naturalists, takes us through a forested ravine and old farm fields, and offers a compelling example of ecological farmland restoration.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
There is parking available on the road outside the entrance to the reserve, on Kitchigami Road.
What can/can’t I bring to the event?
This event will be held rain or shine. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy closed-toed shoes, as we will be walking off trail for a portion of the event. Bring a hat, raincoat and re-fillable water bottle.
