Also known as Chinese Sumac, it originated in China. Tree of Heaven have been planted for ornamental purposes for many years. They are tolerant of poor air quality in large urban areas and will survive on marginal sites. This is the species featured in the novel “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” by Betty Smith. Unfortunately they may become invasive and are considered a noxious weed in many areas of the world.
